The Windamere Hotel Darjeeling - Getting There and Staying There on Honeymoon

This article is about doing something different for your honeymoon. Why not go on a voyage of discovery, something challenging, that will give you a little peek into the past. It does involve a pretty long plane journey possibly overnight on a train, and then an incredible short journey to take you on a small toy train really up high into the foothills of Mount Everest. This article is all about the Windamere Hotel in Darjeeling for your honeymoon with a difference.
The Windamere Hotel in Darjeeling is so delightfully old fashioned in the nicest possible way. Darjeeling is around 6000 ft up in the Himalayan foothills and was where the British went to escape the heat of the Indian summer. You will be thinking why should I choose to go to Darjeeling for my honeymoon.
Your honeymoon should be the one time in your life to be a bit more adventurous. Darjeeling has to be seen to be believed, and the views of the Himalayas from the wonderful Windamere Hotel are quite breathtaking. OK let's get on and describe the hotel to you. Just before we do that we'll expand upon the journey to the Windamere. Kolkata is a good point of arrival into India to go to Darjeeling. Your onward journey to Darjeeling can be made in one of two ways. You can go by train, preferably overnight or fly to a point closer to Darjeeling.
The sleeper train does sound exciting, perhaps a little unnnerving but what a tale to tell. You should now transfer to the Toy Train a narrow guage train which has gone up and down to Darjeeling forever. The views are spectacular and it seems such a waste to go by car. First impressions of the Windamere are that it is just so English. There is only one accommodation type to choose, and as travellers and adventurers you will have chosen well.
You should have booked the old fashioned rooms in the main house called the Welcome Hermitage. If you came to The Windamere to see the old fashioned way of life, then these rooms have it all. No electronic gizmos, chintz curtains, hot water bottles and a coal fire burning brightly in the grate, because the nights are cold.

You will find very quickly that the service on offer is old fahioned and proper. A traditional roast beef Sunday lunch is only part of the high service traditions here. Cucumber sandwiches for tea on the terrace, and starched linen are the kind of standards you could get used to.
Of course the position of the Windamere Hotel on Observatory Hill above Darjeeling lends itself to great views down to the town and up to Kangchenjunga the third highest mountain in the world. Out of the many places to visit there is one that stands out. I'm taking about Tiger Hill at dawn to view Mount Kangchenjunga when the first rays of the sun strike it. It is freezing cold so dress warm, be prepared to rise at 3am and have a taxi booked there and back. Finally don't be tempted to go inside at the view point you will not get the best view.
The author hopes this article has been useful. You don't have to be on honeymoon to go there!
